Abe slid a manila envelope across the table. 'You will go into Cairo as a buyer for a leather company in southwestern Virginia. I am sending a man with you. He will help you find what you need. Remember, he is not your bodyguard. He can only help.' Right on cue, our waiter re-appeared, and I was introduced to him. Pete Simon didn't plan on spending his twilight years as a globe-trotting spy, but when he and his friend Tyne Colson set up a website devoted to categorizing and tracking suspicious Islamic groups in their area, they find themselves caught up in an unexpected adventure. Despite their age, Pete and Tyne are devoted patriots who will stop at nothing to help protect their country. Tyne stays behind to track the movements of the groups at home, and Pete sets off to trace the origins of the cells. On a whirlwind chase through Israel, Afghanistan, Cairo, and Pakistan, Pete unearths a plot that will have far-reaching implications. They may have discovered The Enemy Next Door, but will they be able to stop them in time?

September 11, 2001, focused America's attention on the terrorist threat from abroad, but as the World Trade Center towers collapsed, domestic right-wing hate groups were celebrating in the United States. "Hallelu-Yahweh! May the WAR be started! DEATH to His enemies, may the World Trade Center BURN TO THE GROUND!" announced August Kreis of the paramilitary group, the Posse Comitatus. "We can blame no others than ourselves for our problems due to the fact that we allow ...Satan's children, called jews (sic) today, to have dominion over our lives." The Terrorist Next Door reveals the men behind far right groups like the Posse Comitatus - Latin for "power of the county" -- and the ideas that inspired their attempts to bring about a racist revolution in the United States. Timothy McVeigh was executed for killing 168 people when he bombed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in 1995, but The Terrorist Next Door goes well beyond the destruction in Oklahoma City and takes readers deeper and more broadly inside the Posse and other groups that comprise the paramilitary right. From the emergence of white supremacist groups following the Civil War, through the segregationist violence of the civil rights era, the right-wing tax protest movement of the 1970s, the farm crisis of the 1980s and the militia movement of the 1990s, the book details the roots of the radical right. It also tells the story of men like William Potter Gale, a retired Army officer and the founder of the Posse Comitatus whose hate-filled sermons and calls to armed insurrection have fueled generations of tax protesters, militiamen and other anti-government zealots since the 1960s. Written by Daniel Levitas, a national expert on the origins and activities of white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups, The Terrorist Next Door is painstakingly researched and includes rich detail from official documents (including the FBI), private archives and confidential sources never before disclosed. In detailing these and other developments, The Terrorist Next Door will prove to be the most definitive history of the roots of the American militia movement and the rural radical right ever written.

"Malae is like a young Nelson Algren or Richard Wright, one of those writers who can hit with both hands." —Russell Banks By way of Italy, the Felice family puts down new roots in Southern California, settling into a grand Victorian home and buying a share of the great American Dream. But for their five, first-generation children, an idyllic childhood didn’t quite translate into success and happiness. Rather, the pressures of living up to expectations drove a wide rift through the family. After decades apart, the five siblings find themselves together again at their ailing mother’s bedside, caught in a deadlocked feud over her hospice care. Into the morass steps Murron Teinetoa, one of their bastard children, who carries an idealistic hope of finally fitting in among her estranged relatives. In an interweaving narrative, Malae portrays the Felices in their formative years of the fifties; he excavates the personal lives of the siblings in the eighties and nineties; and he follows Murron in the present as she raises her son as a single mother. A powerful and fiery multi-generational story, Our Frail Blood captures the beauty and horror, the strength and fragility, the selfishness and love comprising the threads of familial bonds.

Cyrla's neighbors have begun to whisper. Her cousin, Anneke, is pregnant and has passed the rigorous exams for admission to the Lebensborn, a maternity home for girls carrying German babies. But Anneke's soldier has disappeared, and Lebensborn babies are only ever released to their father's custody-- or taken away. A note is left under the mat. Someone knows that Cyrla, sent from Poland years before for safekeeping with her Dutch relatives, is Jewish. The Nazis are imposing more and more restrictions; she won't be safe there for long. And then in the space of an afternoon, life falls apart. Cyrla must choose between certain discovery in her cousin's home and taking Anneke's place in the Lebensborn--Cyrla and Anneke are nearly identical. If she takes refuge in the enemy's lair, can Cyrla fool the doctors, nurses, guards, and other mothers-to-be? Can she escape before they discover she is not who she claims? Mining a lost piece of history, Sara Young takes us deep into the lives of women living in the worst of times. Part love story and part elegy for the terrible choices we must often make to survive, MY ENEMY'S CRADLE keens for what we lose in war and sings for the hope we sometimes find.

The Lawrences were newcomers to the town. Nobody knew much about them. Old Mr Lawrence was seventy and had had a stroke which deprived him of his powers of speech, and he was being looked after by his daughter-in-law. This much Lucy Summers was aware of when she went round to the house for her first appointment as his physiotherapist. What she was not prepared for was the shock of seeing the old man sitting in his wheelchair in the garden desperately trying to steal the crusts off the bird-table with his good hand. Is old Mr Lawrence simply senile? Or is he being systematically starved to death by his neat and civil daughter-in-law? You don’t get a straight answer to a question like that, so Lucy enlists the aid of Geoff Harris, one of the local GPs. He has a word with the district nurse, and the local Social Services are deployed under the wilfully independent generalship of Mrs Chandler, who finds young Mrs Lawrence such a nice client. And then there’s a regrettable holiday accident and the questions the town finds to ask about the Lawrence family are only just beginning . . . Josephine Bell is a past-master at the art of conveying something evil nurturing itself behind, and indeed on, the bureaucratic routine of her small town life, as Health Service talks to Social Service and local vicar’s wife speculates to local estate agent’s wife and local newspaper man snuffs the air. The result is a deadly tale in this popular author’s most sharply observant vein. “Miss Bell’s cool, clinical style is a delight.” Sunday Times
