A cold night turns unexpectedly hot. Ian Cabot has led a shy, sheltered life ever since a plane accident killed his mother and left him emotionally and physically scarred. His father’s marriage of convenience forces him into the magnetic orbit of his soon-to-be cousin by marriage. The man who meets him at the airport is just the kind of commanding man he hopes will rid him of his virginity. Too bad anything between them is out of bounds. James Reynolds has no time or patience for his cousin’s social-climbing marriage, and even less for taking a detour to deal with the pampered son of her fiancé. As a hard-working and dedicated family man, he agrees to pick Ian up and get him to the wedding. The pretty college boy who hides half his face is not what he is expecting and proves to be disturbingly tempting. Whatever discipline Ian and James have to keep their relationship strictly familial is tested by an unseasonable blizzard and the sexual heat they can’t ignore.

"Always A Groomsman Never The Groom" IS THE MAN THAT EVERY WOMAN LONGS FOR AND THE MAN THAT EVERY MAN LONGS TO BE, it's a celebration of the act of men mentoring their fellowman. It is a clarion call to revive the honor, integrity and character of a forgotten time cherished tradition of fathering. The stories in this book demonstrate the importance of men strengthening men to become their highest and best. To honor their wives and lead their children. We have for several generations abdicated our duties as men, thus leaving us with a current status of a society in total chaos and in disarray. It's time to awaken the Lions and Donkeys within and roar with nobility and bear our burdens responsibly. It's time to groom the grooms and restore our men.

Boss Ladies, Watch Out! brings together in a convenient format Terry Castle's most scintillating recent essays on literary criticism, women's writing and sexuality. Readers of Castle's many books and reviews already know her as one of the most incisive and witty critics writing today. The articles collected in Boss Ladies, Watch Out! constitute an extended meditation - both learned and personal - on just what it means to be a Female Critic. In the book's opening essays Castle examines how women became critics in the first place - scandalously at times - in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. She explores in particular Jane Austen's "talismanic" role in the establishment of a female critical tradition. In the second part of the book, Castle embraces, with gusto, the role of Female Critic herself. In lively reconsiderations of Sappho, Bronte, Cather, Colette, Gertrude Stein, and many other great women writers - "Boss Ladies" all - Castle pays a moving and civilized tribute to female genius and intellectual daring.

“What girl can’t identify with Never the Bride? This is a fabulously funny novel with deep truths embedded in its pages.” –Kristin Billerbeck, author of What a Girl Wants “I admire writers who employ words to paint touchable pictures, likable characters, introducing us to instant friends who lead us to unexpected endings. That’s why I love Never The Bride.” –SQuire Rushnell, author of the When GOD Winks books Eleven Bridesmaid Dresses Don’t Lie Since she was just a little girl, Jessie Stone dreamed up hundreds of marriage proposals, doodled the romantic ideas in her journal with her treasured purple pen, and fantasized about wedding dresses and falling in love. She’s been a bridesmaid nearly a dozen times, waved numerous couples off to sunny honeymoons, and shopped in more department stores for half-price fondue pots than she cares to remember. But shopping for one key component of these countless proposals hasn't been quite as productive–a future husband. The man she thought she would marry cheated on her. The crush she has on her best friend Blake is at very best…well, crushing. And speed dating has only churned out memorable horror stories. So when God shows up one day, in the flesh, and becomes a walking, talking part of her life, Jessie is skeptical. What will it take to convince her that the Almighty has a better plan than one she’s already cooked up in her journals? Can she turn over her pen and trust someone else to craft a love story beyond her wildest dreams? Cheryl McKay is the screenwriter for the award-winning film The Ultimate Gift. She also wrote an episode of Gigi: God’s Little Princess, based on the book by Sheila Walsh, and Taylor’s Wall, a drama about high-school violence. She’s been writing since the tender age of five when she penned her first play. Cheryl is originally from Boston, Massachusetts, and currently lives in Los Angeles. Rene Gutteridge is a critically acclaimed comedy writer and novelist. She is the author of fifteen novels including the Boo series, My Life as a Doormat, the Occupational Hazards series, and the novelization of the motion picture The Ultimate Gift. She lives in Oklahoma with her family. From the Trade Paperback edition.

A Pulitzer Prize Finalist From one of our most heralded writers--Joy Williams belongs, James Salter has written, "in the company of Céline, Flannery O'Connor, and Margaret Atwood"--her first novel in more than a decade: the life-and-death adventures of three misfit teenagers in the American desert. Alice, Corvus, and Annabel, each a motherless child, are an unlikely circle of friends. One filled with convictions, another with loss, the third with a worldly pragmatism, they traverse an air-conditioned landscape eccentric with signs and portents--from the preservation of the living dead in a nursing home to the presentation of the dead as living in a wildlife museum--accompanied by restless, confounded adults. A father lusts after his handsome gardener even as he's haunted (literally) by his dead wife; a heartbroken dog runs afoul of an angry neighbor; a young stroke victim drifts westward, his luck running from worse to awful; a sickly musician for whom Alice develops an attraction is drawn instead toward darker imaginings and solutions; and an aging big-game hunter finds spiritual renewal through his infatuation with an eight-year-old--the formidable Emily Bliss Pickless. With nature thoroughly routed and the ambiguities of existence on full display, life and death continue in directions both invisible and apparent. Gloriously funny and wonderfully serious, The Quick and the Dead limns the vagaries of love, the thirst for meaning, and the peculiar paths by which all creatures are led to their destiny. A panorama of contemporary life and an endlessly surprising tour de force: penetrating and magical, ominous and comic, this is the most astonishing book yet in Joy Williams's illustrious career.

Web Text This is the first time the writings of Flora Belle Jan, the Chinese American flapper and writer, are assembled into a single volume. The book consists of some one hundred pieces of prose and poetry, available from microfilm of newspapers and magazines that ceased publication prior to 1950. A native of Fresno, California, Flora Belle Jan was born in 1906. She lived above Yet Far Low, a restaurant owned by her parents, at 1007 China Alley. Her world at home was Chinese. Her world at school, with teachers and classmates, was American. Many of her classmates were also children of immigrant parents. Her own parents, Jan Chong and Jan Yom, had separately emigrated from Southern China in the late 1800s. Her classmates parents included immigrants from Ireland, Italy, Russia, England, Mexico, and Armenia. In her early years, the country of origin of the parents did not hinder the formation of close friendships among girls with shared interests and activities. Flora Jan and her friends enjoyed writing poems and stories, and aspired to careers in literature and journalism. She received encouragement from Grace May North, editor of the Sunnyside Club column in The Fresno Herald. Jans earliest works appeared in this column. Her topics were typically American, involving for example, a selfish prince, a faithful dog, a poor newsgirl, and poems about patriotism. In only two stories, The Chinese Girls Valentine, and The Contest, did she introduce a Chinese connection. Another important person in Flora Jans life was Amy Purcell, Superintendent of the Baptist Chinese Mission in Fresno. She recognized Floras talents. With Miss Purcells help, the Chinese Students Club of Fresno published The Trailmaker. Flora Jan, the only female member of the Club, played a major role in the publication. Flora Jans parents did not support her desire to further her education. She worked at various jobs and at age 18, earned money for college by writing feature stories for The San Francisco Examiner. For several of these stories, Jan invented the female character Ming Toy. Among eight children in her family, Flora Jan was the only one to earn a college degree and to pursue a career in journalism. Although Flora Jan attended the University of California, Berkeley for only one semester in the autumn of 1925, she left a strong impression on those who knew her. Her reputation as a prolific young writer, as well as her beauty and flamboyant flapper life style was remembered forty years later. Your mother was the Belle of Berkeley, was the remark said to my sister, Fiore Wang, who attended the University of California, Berkeley and there from graduated. Flora Jan transferred to the University of Chicago, where she studied English literature and graduated with honors in 1927. The impetus for her transfer to Chicago was due to Professor Robert E. Park. He directed the Survey of Race Relations project, and believed that Jan would succeed in assimilation into main stream white society. An analysis of Parks project and Jans participation may be found in the treatise, Thinking Orientals, by Henry Yu Most of Jans writings during her years in Chicago appeared in The Chinese Students Monthly, a magazine founded in 1904 and published by the Chinese Students Alliance in the United States of America. In her fictional works, Romance on the Roof and Transplanted Flower Blossoms, Flora Jan created humorous and delicate inter-racial romances. She served in the capacity of a Contributing Editor at first, and later became an Associate Editor of the Monthly. She also sold stories to the Chicago Daily News and to the magazine Real Detective Tales. In 1932, Flora Jan and her husband, Charles Wang, left Chicago to go to China. Probably the most compelling reason for their move was financial. Although Charles had earned a Ph.D. degree in psychology at the University of Chicago, he could not obtain

The authors of this slender volume of poetry are Flora Belle Jan and Ludmelia Holstein, brought together by historical circumstances and by their passion for poetry. Jan, a Chinese American flapper and journalist, was born in Fresno, California. Holstein, born in Russia of German speaking parents, grew up in Fresno from the age of eight. These collected poems express the exuberance and intensity of their youth. Jans life was short. Their friendship lived on in their poetry.
